What this method prevents
Strong evidence for several components creates confidence in a conclusion that still depends on one unsupported assumption.
Illustrative example
A business case has reliable price data but depends on an untested adoption-rate forecast. The forecast, not the price, sets the reliance ceiling.
How it works
A controlled sequence
- Map the claim chain.
- Identify which components are necessary.
- Score evidence and uncertainty for each.
- Test whether the conclusion survives removal or failure of each component.
- Name the limiting component.
- Set the reliance ceiling from that component.
Reliance note
The method supports governance; it does not self-authorise a decision.
Application must be proportionate to the task, evidence and consequence level. The output should state what has been registered, what remains uncertain and which authorised human or organisation controls release.
